New Tech --- LMS will chew up the university system in the next decade

DISCLAIMER: I don't feel negatively about all of my courses, but there are enough bad apples to make this account ring true for many students if not all.

LMS technology will most vastly effect the world out of all the learning tech solutions.

Online learning is natural, easy, and convenient. Many companies are already using LMS to train their employees and enjoy, in particular, the ability of these systems to teach relevant information without exorbitant costs (like university is infamous for). Another benefit of the LMS platform is that there is not any required classes or extra classes thrown in with the courses people care about.

Many, if not all, of the people who attend university are bothered by the extra courses required for graduation. University learning is not valid except in terms of degrees. If you are one class away from graduation you do not receive most of the credit or any recognition at all even if that course is something entirely unrelated to your major field of study. For example an engineer would be held from graduation if that person did not complete a P.E. course. Another issue with the multi-class approach is that classwork overlaps and professors have no interest in changing coursework due dates for their customers (the students) in cases where the student would clearly be better off if they were given a different schedule of coursework.

This is not the case with the majority of independent companies who only focus on making sure you are good at what they teach before you get certification if that takes you more or less time that is okay as long as you can do the work.

Professors do not give timely feedback. LMS is usually instant or close to it in feedback. I was personally able to cover 3 years worth of math work in one month using ALEKS math course online. this program instantly graded my math work and pointed out where I might be missing information based on my answers. this quick feedback and specific teaching was all done on my own time and for much lower cost than even one university course would have been. It is easy to learn this way and the format is similar to having a personal tutor at your side.

Athletics draw away from the validity of university education. Many athletes are admitted into schools they would not have made it into except for their physical abilities. Those physical abilities are not related directly to their ability to do school work or to be competent in educational pursuit. The school does not mind the fact that these under-qualified individuals are holding back classmates and themselves because for the university athletic ability is more important than learning. Learning Management Systems outside of the school trap are not bound by the same silly athletic expectations and so they can focus on merit  and ensure that only qualified individuals are given their mark of approval/certifications.

LMS is more relevant to actual tech of the working world. When a company sells a program to certify and train for a company they must be on the cutting edge of tech or they will be obsolete and ignored by their target audience. The university has very few of these restrictions because they operate on donated money instead of by free market principles. This is why you have probably taken outdated courses at the university.

LMS is much cheaper. Because the certification and LMS market does not provide any service save those which teach they are not obligated to pay for clubs, sports, and courses which are not important to the learning process. You can go to MYEDUCATOR.COM and take a $75 course which is more useful than most of the $500 courses taught at USU.

YOU ARE PAYING ABOUT $35 PER LECTURE FOR THIS SOCIAL MEDIA COURSE.

My guess is that you would not value the course that highly if it was not a step in the graduation rat race. In the free market most of us would not have made it past day one in most classes we are taking (especially if you had to pay the $35 before each class started). The only reason students are willing to pay so much is because the school runs a hegemonic system of fear where you believe that without their degree you will live in a van down by the river. Seriously consider your motives. If you had a degree today, would you consider your classes to be worth $8000 per year (two semester in-state)?

My final reason for my preference of online learning solutions is the way students are treated. Usually the students are dancing all over themselves to be buddies or at least be in positive light with professors. Who is paying whom? Have you ever gone into Walmart and felt the need to suck up to the cashier? The fact is that professors are complacent because their narrative of fear surrounding a life without a degree keeps us all in line like the pathetic people they see us as. LMS only has power while people want their products. If they make a bad product or do ANYTHING to bother a customer they will fall all over themselves to make it right. When was the last time you had a professor treat you this way?

People are getting sick of the university system, and it is easily understood why. With online learning tools becoming more prevalent, we will see a major shift in certification as well as learning to a market approach with respect for customers and common-sense pricing.
